End of the Year Survey – 2016

End of the Year Survey

This is a survey crated by Jamie @perpetualpageturner. If you want to know more about it just click the image above and it will lead you to the original post. All the graphics are done by Jamie as well, I take no credit for them.

This is the second year that I’m doing this survey. I just find them to be fantastic ways to wrap up a year and being able to look at it whenever I feel like it is amazing as well. If you want to check out my last years survey you can do that HERE.

This post is REALLY LATE as well…Ups! Sorry about that. I had some exams and I got sick as well. Now I have done with most of the exams and I’m beyond happy about that! And I’m feeling a lot better as well, so I could finally finish this post! Enough rambling, let’s get into the actual post.

End of the Year Survey

Number Of Books You Read: 72

Number of Re-Reads: 11

Wow, this year I had quiet a few rereads. I honestly didn’t think there were that many of them. To be fair 5 of them were Harry Potter books, so there’s that.

Genre You Read The Most From: Fantasy

And basically nobody is surprised about that. Fantasy is always going to be my most read genre, after all it is my favourite one as well.

1. Best Book You Read In 2016?

The Star-Touched QueenPicking my favourite book of 2016 was…A LOT EASIER than I though it would be. Usually I can’t decide which book was my favourite and I always have at least 3 that I can’t decide between. Apparently I didn’t read that many books that I loved in 2016. (And I’m not counting rereads for this one.)

The books that I’m choosing is The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi. This book was simply wonderful, I loved it. It was basically everything that I wanted it to be. I have also reread this book as well, in the same year that I read it for the first time – that NEVER happens to me. I guess it just shows how much I loved this book.

If you want to know more of my thoughts on it, you can read my full review HERE.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

NimonaThe book that surprised me the most, in the BEST WAY possible, was Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. I had heard amazing things about this graphic novel before reading it, but I had no idea what it was about. I decided to go into it blind, without knowing anything. EVERYTHING about this story surprised me and I loved every moment of it.

Nothing was the way I expected it to be. I would really recommend going into this graphic novel blindly as well, it’s a lot more fun that way. (Or at least it was that way for me.)

(I have a review for this graphic novel, you can read it HERE.)

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

5. Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016?

These two books can literary fit as an answer to all three questions. Six of Crows is definitely the best series I started in 2016. Crooked Kingdom was definitely the best sequel and also the best series ender. This series is simply wonderful on all levels and I absolutely adored it. As I keep on mentioning over and over again. (One of them would have been my favourite book of the year, if this category didn’t exist, and I didn’t want to repeat myself too much.) This is definitely one of my all time favourite series!!

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2016?

I don’t actually have an answer for this one. Why? From each new author that I discovered this year (and loved their work) I have only read one book of theirs. And reading just one of their work, be it their debut or just a new to me book, is not enough to classify them as my “new favourite author”. So I’m basically not answering this question with anything concrete.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

CinderI don’t tend to read a lot of science fiction, be it adult or young adult. I honestly have no idea why, I simply always gravitate towards fantasy instead. I seriously NEED to read more science fiction, as I do tend to enjoy the books that I end up reading.

I read Cinder by Marissa Meyer this year and found it amazing and very entertaining. I was very intrigued by the world created in this book and the characters were great as well (especially Cinder and Prince Kai). Plus it’s a fairy tale retelling and I do tend to enjoy those. I’m really looking forward to continuing this series in 2017. I can’t wait to find out where the story will go.

If you want to know more of my thoughts on this book you can check out my full review HERE.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Wolf by WolfWithout a doubt this has to be Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin.

This book was VERY fast paced and thrilling. I don’t remember the last time I read a book that was as hard to put down as this one. (Not counting the Six of Crows duology, otherwise I could count it for every question.) The only reason that it took me a few days to read this book is because I was buddy reading it with Ariana @TheQuirkyBookNerd. Otherwise I would have probably read it in one day. Or one sitting, if I had the time during the day. (Which I don’t remember if I had right now.)

Interested in more of my thoughts? But more coherent? The check out my full review of this book HERE!!

9. Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2016?

11. Most memorable character of 2016?

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2016?

The Star-Touched Queen“I see only night and smoke, dreams and glass, embers and wings. And I would not have you any other way.”

“I wanted a love thick with time, as inscrutable as if a lathe had carved it from night and as familiar as the marrow in my bones. I wanted the impossible, which made it that much easier to push out of my mind.”

“No matter where we are, we’ll always share the same sky. We can always find each other in the same constellation.”

“Who wanted to be smiled at by the girl that trailed shadows like pets, conjured snakes and waited for Death, her bridegroom, to steal her from these walls?”

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016?

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read?

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2016?

GrishaNo mourners. No funerals. Among them, it passed for ‘good luck.”

“Kaz leaned back. “What’s the easiest way to steal a man’s wallet?”
“Knife to the throat?” asked Inej.
“Gun to the back?” said Jesper.
“Poison in his cup?” suggested Nina.
“You’re all horrible,” said Matthias.”

“When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.”

“I’m a business man,” he’d told her. “No more, no less.”
“You’re a thief, Kaz.”
“Isn’t that what I just said?”

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2016?

end of the year

17. Book That Shocked You The Most?

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)?

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year?

All of the relationships from the Six of Crows duology!!! (I don’t think this surprises anyone.) I love all the romantic and platonic relationships in this book series! I seriously couldn’t have chosen another one for these two questions.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2016 From An Author You’ve Read Previously?

Both Victoria Schwab and Leigh Bardugo are my favourite authors (well some of them) and I’ll basically read anything that they write. So, of course, I had to choose them!!

21. Best Book You Read In 2016 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2016?

Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows. I just tend to love thieves, assassin’s and other morally grey characters – they are always my favourites. And I always want to read books about them! So, of course I had to chose Kaz!

23. Best 2016 debut you read?

The Star-Touched Queen

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

I decided to go with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling, or more specifically the edition with illustrations by Jim Kay. This was one of the first books that I have read in 2016. All the illustrations were beautiful and I couldn’t stop smiling while I was reading it. And let’s be real, rereading Harry Potter is always fun! (Especially when you have such wonderful illustrations!)

Harry Potter

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016?

I haven’t actually read a book in 2016 that actually made me cry (in the sobbing kind of way). I did however tear up while reading a few books. I did reread the Harry Potter series and those books always tear me up at parts, I think most of all The Order of the Phoenix and The Deathly Hallows. And I teared up in Crooked Kingdom as well, if you have read it you know why!

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?

Iron Cast

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2016?

I have to go with Through the Woods by Emily Carroll. This was a reread, but it is definitely the most unique book that I read in 2016. It’s a graphic novel of short stories – I have never seen any other graphic novel that is like that. Plus it’s very creepy and beautiful and I loved it! (Just thought I should mention that as well.)

Through the Woods

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

That has to be Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. I was really disappointed with this book, I was expecting to absolutely love it but that didn’t happen. I had heard amazing things about and especially about the friendship. And in the end it just wasn’t for me. I have written a little rant on goodreads after I finished the book, so if you want to know more of my thoughts you can check it out HERE!

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2016?

Oh my God. I honestly have NO IDEA!! I have no idea who I actually followed in 2016 and who earlier (or later). BUT know this, if I follow you yours is one of my favourite blogs! (I don’t even want to try and name all the amazing blogs I discovered, because I know that I’ll forget people and that causes me anxiety.)

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2016?

I have two for this one actually. I just couldn’t choose which one I liked more. They are:

I think they were my favourite to write and I do love the way they turned out to be!

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?

I’m actually going with my favourite new non-bookish posts of 2016. Since I haven’t written any discussions, though I probably should do that in the future (but that’s a topic of it’s own). Moving on!

In 2016 I decided to start writing my anime wrap ups along my usual reading ones. They are not my most popular posts, which is understandable as not everyone enjoys or watches anime, BUT they are extremely fun for me to write and I love being able to look back on what I watched and what I thought of them. Plus sharing my love for anime is amazing as well! I have written 5 in total so far and I really look forward to writing more, as I watch more anime!

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

None actually. I didn’t participate in any particular events. And the only two memes that I do on my blog are Top Ten Tuesday and Top Five Wednesday – not even every week at that, only when the topic interests me (which now that I look back isn’t that often either). So basically none?

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2016?

I think reaching over 400 followers has been the most mind-blowing and amazing thing that happened. I NEVER expected that anyone would be interested in my blog when I started it. So that this many people follow me and read my ramblings is seriously insane!

And best bookish moments are always when I discover a new favourite and simply adore a book! There weren’t that many in 2016 in comparison to the year before, but I did read some wonderful books that made my year!

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

I think it was actually finding time to read and motivating myself to blog, especially in the last few months of the year. I was really busy with university and studying – so finding time to read and blog wasn’t that easy. And when I actually did have time I was too tired and didn’t feel like either writing or reading.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog?

This was The Get To Know Me Tag. It was definitely one of my favourite tags that I did as well. I just loved writing more about me as a person instead of writing about books (for a change). Sooo if you haven’t checked it out and want to know more about me, do that!!

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

I don’t have one? I write because I love doing it, or because I want to record my thoughts on books that I read. I’m VERY happy with however much attention any of my posts gets. I don’t even check my statistics (aside for this post, as it requires it), so I don’t even know how good or bad my posts are doing on average. And I honestly don’t care about that. I blog because I love doing it and the stats don’t really matter to me! (Obviously since I don’t know any of them…)

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

I don’t think I had any for this? I really can’t remember discovering anything new this year. I tend to stick to the book stores that I like (or bookdepository) and I don’t think I have found a new book related site in 2016. No answer from me again, how surprising.

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

I only did the goodreads reading challenge, as I do every year. I did manage to complete it and I’m BEYOND happy about that!! I honestly don’t feel as if I read over 70 books in 2016…it seems like I didn’t read that many, but oh well it seems that I did.

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2016 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2017?

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2017 (non-debut)?

I don’t actually have any. I have decided that I want to read the books that I already own. I have MANY that I seriously need to read, but I keep pushing them back. That’s why this year I’m not really looking for new releases (there are exceptions of course, but they are series), instead I want to read the ones I have been exited about for a long time.

3. 2017 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2017?

I’m currently reading A Darker Shade of Magic and I’m LOVING it so far! Sooo I’m exited about the third book, even if I haven’t finished the first one yet. A Crown of Wishes is my most anticipated book of this year! I seriously can’t wait to get my hands on that book. And I’m really interested in where the story will go in Traitor to the Throne.

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2017?

I have actually three reading things that I would like to accomplish:

  • reducing my TBR as much as possible, I would like it to be under 10 books – we shall see if I’ll be able to do that, it’s at 44 at the moment,
  • continue the series that I have already started and finish or catch up to most of them (for some reason I have gotten bad at finishing series),
  • read the high fantasy books that I own (they are giant and I always put them of, even though I’m pretty sure I’ll love all of them).

Hopefully I’ll be able to accomplish all of them!

6. A 2017 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone:

I haven’t read one yet. Soooo I can’t recommend any.

This post is DONE! It has taken me a lot longer than I though it would and it’s really late as well. BUT at least I have finally finished it!

Do let me know if you have any thoughts on any of my answers (I would be more specific, but there are waaaaay to many questions to do that)!

Thank you very much for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day!

  1. Wow great picks for your end of year survey Anna. Although The Star-Touched Queen was one of my favourite books of last year it wasn’t quite my ultimate favourite (that was Crooked Kingdom) but I am so so excited to get around to A Crown of Wishes. Ever since I heard there was a companion novel being released it’s been at the top of my to-read list!
A lot of your answers were favourite reads of mine last year as well, and all I will say about A Darker Shade of Magic is that you really need to read it as soon as possible. It is probably one of my ultimate favourite books ever so I push pretty much everyone to pick it up! 😀
It looks like you had an amazing 2016, hopefully your 2017 will be just as great and filled with even more amazing books! 🙂 ❤

    1. Thank you! ❤ I was debating whether to pick The Star-Touched Queen or the Six of Crows duology – but as I saw that the next category would be "favourite series" I decided to go with The Star-Touched Queen. (I didn't really want to repeat myself too much!) Yesss to the companion novel! The release date can't come out soon enough!
I'm glad that you enjoyed my reviews! I'm reading A Darker Shade of Magic at the moment (I'm about 150 pages in) and I'm LOVING it so far! I can definitely see why it's one of your favourite books. 😀 I have a feeling that it will be one of mine as well.
My year has been really good! Thank you sooo much! I hope your 2017 will be wonderful as well. ❤ 🙂

      1. That’s all right! 😀 ❤ That's actually a wise choice. I tried to do the same with my end of year survey, if I saw another book that could be added to another question I did that instead but all-time favourite definitely went to Crooked Kingdom, no doubt about it.
Oh that is amazing to hear. I am definitely going to be keeping an eye out for your review of that one. Hopefully the remainder of the book will be as brilliant as you thought the first 150 pages were! 😀
Thanks so much Anna, and so far so good! 😀 ❤

        1. I don’t think I actually read that many books that made it into my favourites in 2016. Sooo I had a bit of a problem with not repeating myself in this post! XD
I’m sure that the whole book will be wonderful! I’m really getting into the story and characters now. And so far Victoria Schwab has never disappointed me!
          ❤ 🙂

          1. I didn’t notice many repeats so I think you succeeded in that, and I guess if there were less books that made it onto your list it must have been easy to choose between them right?
That’s great, you’ll have to let me know what you thin when you’ve finished it! 🙂

  2. Great picks! I loved The Star Touched Queen as well.
I’ve been wanting to post this survey as well but I felt silly posting it so late lol but the survey looks so fun and its a neat way to look over the reading year

    1. Thank you! It’s such a fantastic book. 😀
Hahaha, same with me. I wanted to post it in the beginning of the year, but I got too busy and sick to do it. Still, this blog is a reflection for me – so that I’ll be able to see what I thought about books (and other things), so I decided to write this post anyway! And it is really fun. 😉

  3. ooh so glad Star Crossed Queen was your favourite book- I’ve had it on my kindle for ages and still haven’t read it! And I really want to read Six of Crows and Wolf by Wolf!! Plus I’ve heard good things about Through the Woods- glad you thought it was good!! And I hope you enjoy Darker Shade of Magic when you get to it! Great post!!

    1. I really loved The Star-Crossed Queen and I hope you’ll enjoy it as well, when you get around to it! 🙂 Six of Crows and Wolf by Wolf are both wonderful and I can only recommend them!! Through the Woods is beautiful, though also very creepy. I’m currently reading A Darker Shade of Magic and I’m really loving it so far! Thank you!! 🙂

  4. I think it’s funny all of the books you recommend to everyone are ALL on my TBR if I haven’t already read them. I’m hoping to get to The Star-Touched Queen within the first half of this year since you always rave about it and it just looks amazing!
I also 100% agree that Nimona is amazing! I think it’s a great gateway graphic novel because now I can’t add enough of them to my TBR.
I also wasn’t that impressed with Truthwitch especially after the ridiculous amount of hype it recieved.
Loved, loved, loved reading through all of your answers Anna! 😁

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha, that’s really funny! I really hope that you enjoy The Star-Touched Queen as much as I did. 😀
Nimona really surprised me. I did expect to like it, based on the summary, but I didn’t think it would be the way it was. It was waaay darker than I thought it would ever be. It really is a great gateway to graphic novels as well, as it’s both a standalone and has beautiful art, characters and story.
Yeah, Truthwitch got waaay too much hype in my opinion and it really wasn’t worth it. Or maybe I was expecting too much of it.
I’m really glad to hear that! ❤ 🙂

  5. I completely agree on the awesomeness that is the Six of Crows duology, but did you also read Blood for Blood? Because that book had such a perfect ending, but it also broke your heart and just argh! AWESOMENESS!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yesss!! Those two books are wonderful! ❤ I haven't read Blood for Blood yet, I honestly have NO IDEA why! I definitely should have picked it up by now, but I haven't even bought it yet. Hopefully that will happen soon! I'm glad to hear that you loved it though, it makes me even more exited to be reading it! 😀

  6. Great wrap up for last year, Anna! I loved reading your answers for this and you know I completely agree with you on all things Six of Crows related. I’ve been wanting to reread it big time lately and it hasn’t even been that long since I first read it lol. I really need to read The Star-Touched Queen this year because I’ve heard so many great things. Also, A Darker Shade of Magic is one of my priority reads for this year too. As soon as I finish my last two review books I am reading that book and the rest of the series. 😊

    1. Thank you Melissa! 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed reading through my answers. Hahaha, well at least we are not alone in the urge to reread Six of Crows. I really hope you enjoy The Star-Touched Queen – I’ll be looking forward to your thoughts on the book, once you decide to read it. The Shades of Magic series (at least I believe it’s called that) is my top priority of this year as well. I still can’t believe that I haven’t read the first book. Well, I’m currently reading it, sooo I’m keeping up with the plan to read it as soon as possible. 😀

        1. I actually just finished A Darker Shade of Magic and it was AMAZING! I loved it!! ❤ I'm actually writing a review for it at the moment, which I'll be posting later in the day…soooo if you want to know more of my thoughts on it look forward to that. 😉

  7. WOW! This is one heck of a wrap up. I love all the questions, and I can definitely see why you would do this a second year running. That said– whew. I imagine this took a ton of your time! What I learned from this is that I obviously need to read Six of Crows duology and more V. E. Schwab books. 🙂 Thanks for sharing! I love this.

    1. It really is one hack of a wrap up. And yes, it took A TON of time – a lot more than I thought it would. (Plus I was otherwise busy so I thought I would never get it done.) But I love doing these yearly wrap ups, because it makes remembering the books I read in a year a lot easier. YESS to both of those things! 😀 I’m glad you enjoyed it.
