Books I’ve Read Because of Blogging || Top Five Wednesday

Top Five Wednesday is a weekly meme created by Lainey @GingerReadsLainey and she has passed down the torch to Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. For more information and for future topics you can check out the goodreads group.

This week topic was rather hard for me to do. Why? Because EVERYTHING that I read is because of blogging (or sometimes booktube). So I would literary be listing all the books that I read and love!! This week I decided to list books that I wouldn’t have NEVER read, if it wasn’t for blogging. (Okay, “never” might be a bit too extreme, but we shall go with it.)

What I usually do before buying a book:

  • See if a blogger or booktuber I trust has recommended that particular book. I especially look at people who I know have a similar taste in books as I do, after all that way I’m more likely to enjoy a book.
  • Researching reviews on Goodreads and seeing the pros and cons for the book, to see if it’s something that would bother me (like love-triangles, insta-love etc). I just prefer knowing about the book before spending money on it.

When I pick up a book without doing all the research:

  • I have already read something by the author. That way I already know that I enjoy their work, then if the synopsis or blurb sound interesting I will pick it up. For my favourite authors I don’t even look at the synopsis, as I will read literary anything by them.
  • Requesting review copies. Don’t get me wrong, I do read the synopsis of the book but that is all. I don’t look at any existing reviews, simply because I want to go in without any expectations and give my honest feedback.

Anyway, not that I have rambled for a bit lets get into the books!

5. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

I read The Infernal Devices ages ago and loved them, they are definitely one of my favourite trilogies. However, I had no interest in reading The Mortal Instruments. They just didn’t interest me, the only reason I thought of giving them a chance was because of Magnus Bane, who was one of my favourite characters from TID. Some blogging friends recommended me to try this series and while it’s not one of my favourites I’m still glad that I decided to read it and I’m looking forward to continuing it in the future. (As I have only read the first two books so far.)

Ryan Graudin

4. Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

When I first read the synopsis for Wolf by Wolf I thought it sounded okay, but not like something that I would want to read. I thought it was about werewolfs and I’m really not a fan of those. (I literary don’t want to watch any movies about them, or read books, or anything really.) So I decided that I didn’t want to read it. Then a few blogging friends kept reviewing this book and raving about it. Which is also when I found out that it has nothing to do with werewolfs. I ended up reading and loving it because of that!

The Forbidden Wish

3. The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

I would have never have discovered The Forbidden Wish if it wasn’t for my blogging friends. I literary NEVER heard about it until I saw some reviews popping up. This book simply sounded like something that I would love, plus I was always obsessed with the movie Aladdin when I was a child, so there is that as well. When I heard about this book I immediately added it to my TBR and bought it a few weeks later. The Forbidden Wish was such a magical and amazing book and I’m very happy that I discovered it!!

2. Graphic novels in general

This is more of a booktube thing than a blogging thing. Before entering the online bookish community I knew about comics and manga, but not about graphic novels. Nobody in my life talked about them and I had no idea that they existed. Through booktube I discovered many amazing graphic novels and I’m very grateful for that. Some of my favourites are Nimona, Saga, Chew and Through the Woods. And there are so many more that I want to read.

Andy Weir

1. The Martian by Andy Weir

Science fiction isn’t a genre that I reach for often. (Though I want to change that.) It simply isn’t one of my preferred genres. I first heard about The Martian when the movie was announced. It didn’t sound like a book for me. I actually never planned on reading it. But then some blogging friends kept mentioning how amazing it was and how much they loved it. In the end I decided to read it. The Martian is one of my favourite books now and one that I read in a day.

Do you research books before buying/reading them? Or do you prefer not knowing anything about them?

Thank you very much for reading and I hope that you have an amazing day!

  1. Oh this is such a great list! I wouldn’t have known about The Forbidden Wish if it weren’t for so many blogging friends, either. I’m so glad I did read it, it is one of my favorite books of all times now ❤ ❤

  2. Oh I thought you couldn’t actually read TID before reading TMI… But I guess that’s just not true? Yay! That makes me so happy because I had no interest in reading TMI either but I was super intrigued by the prequels 🙂 I’m glad you enjoy both, though.
All your mentions did ring familiar to me, because I wouldn’t have known about them if I wasn’t a blogger, either. Especially the less known ones like The Forbidden Wish. They’re always a hit or miss for me, but I’ve found some true gems.
    Awesome post, Anna! 🙂

    1. Hahaha, yeah you definitely can! The world and everything is explained greatly, so you don’t have to have any prior knowledge of the Shadowhunters. TID are amazing and I highly recommend them! 😀
Most books are either a hit or miss for me, I’m just happy that I get to hear about lesser known books as I don’t always want to read the most popular ones out there.
      Thank you Sophie!! 🙂

  3. Great choices, Anna 🌸
I’ve seen The Martian movie, but I haven’t read the book yet, I really want to. I also have The Forbidden Wish and Nimona on my TBR and I’m hoping I can get to them soon.

  4. What a great list, Anna! I’m so glad that you found graphic novels thanks to BookTube. I try to review at least one graphic novel a month, but I haven’t been great about it lately. You’ve just reminded me to stay honest about that! Nimona and Saga are some of my favorites. If you like fantasy, I encourage you to check out Bone. It’s long, but such a great series!

I have a copy of The Forbidden Wish I won in a GR Giveaway and I COMPLETELY FORGOT until you mentioned it here!!! I’ll definitely have to pick it up and read it soon. I’m so glad you enjoy it.

    1. I’m glad that you liked my list Jackie! 😀 I haven’t been reading graphic novels lately, mostly because I don’t have the money to buy them (Why are they sooo expensive?!) and my library doesn’t have the ones I want to read. Nimona and Saga are amazing!! I will definitely check out Bone.
Wow, it’s great that you won a GR Giveaway! I highly recommend The Forbidden Wish, it’s such a fantastic book!

    1. Saga is amazing! 😀 I haven’t been keeping up with it that much, the last one I read was volume 4 – just because I don’t have the money at the moment to get the other volumes. But I can imagine how hard it’s to wait for the next one to come out!!
