anime wrap up

Discovering some new favourites!! || Anime Wrap Up [#8]

Once again I have managed to finish five anime, so that means that it’s time for another Anime Wrap Up!! (Obviously that is, as you are reading this post.) This time I ended up watching quiet a few good ones. Most of these anime I would consider new favourites of mine! So this time the selection has been rather good, if I do say so myself.

I have decided to start adding GIFs after every anime that I mention. (Obviously the gifs will be from the anime that I’m writing about.) Why? As you may know, if you are following my blog, I love gifs and tend to use them a lot. So I thought I should incorporate them in this as well, especially since you also get to see a bit of the animation at the same time! Plus it does serve as a nice transition between the different anime that I’m writing about. So, it’s basically a win-win situation.

Now, with that out of the way, lets get into the anime that I recently finished!

AnimeKobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Episodes: 13

Slice of Life | Comedy | Fantasy

My rating: 8/10 (Very Good)

As Kobayashi sets off for another day at work, she opens her apartment door only to be met by an unusually frightening sight—the head of a dragon, staring at her from across the balcony. The dragon immediately transforms into a cute and energetic young girl dressed in a maid outfit, introducing herself as Tooru.

It turns out that the stoic programmer had come across the dragon the previous night on a drunken excursion to the mountains, and since the mythical beast had nowhere else to go, she had offered the creature a place to stay in her home. Thus, Tooru had arrived to cash in on the offer, ready to repay her savior’s kindness by working as her personal maidservant. Though deeply regretful of her words and hesitant to follow through on her promise, a mix of guilt and Tooru’s incredible dragon abilities convinces Kobayashi to take the girl in.

Despite being extremely efficient at her job, the maid’s unorthodox methods of housekeeping often end up horrifying Kobayashi and at times bring more trouble than help. Furthermore, the circumstances behind the dragon’s arrival on Earth seem to be much more complicated than at first glance, as Tooru bears some heavy emotions and painful memories. To top it all off, Tooru’s presence ends up attracting several other mythical beings to her new home, bringing in a host of eccentric personalities. Although Kobayashi makes her best effort to handle the crazy situation that she has found herself in, nothing has prepared her for this new life with a dragon maid.

My thoughts:

First of all: that’s seriously a long synopsis for this anime. I don’t really know how to summarise it better, so we shall leave it at that longwinded one. I very much enjoyed this anime! I had previously heard amazing things about it and, while I didn’t love it as much as other people, I ended up having a lot of fun with it.

The whole premise of this anime sounds amazing! A dragon that is going to be a maid? Obviously hilarious situations will occur. And I wasn’t wrong with thinking that! This anime was so much fun and the humour within it was great. All the characters were really interesting and I loved learning more about them as the story continued. Tooru did annoy me from time to time, but I could deal with that. Also, Kanna is the CUTES character ever!! I seriously adore her! ❤

Would I recommend this anime?

Yes, I would definitely recommend this anime! It had a fun story, amazing characters and great character development as well. The animations were simply fantastic, especially the fighting ones (they seriously blew me away). It’s definitely an anime that’s worth checking out!

My thoughts:

First of all this is a Chinese anime – so the voice acting is in Chinese and it has subtitles in English (and also Japanese). This is just something that I thought I should point out before I get into my thoughts on it, as this was the first ever Chinese anime that I have ever watched.

As soon as I read the synopsis for this anime I knew that I was going to like it. Anime about games and gaming just draw me in and I always have a lot of fun watching them. This was obviously no exception to that! The King’s Avatar (which is the name of this anime in English) has a unique premise that I haven’t encountered so far – especially since it’s about gaming and it’s following an older character. (If I remember correctly he is 25.) It was very interesting to delve into the world of professional gaming and seeing how everything works.

The characters in this story are very interesting! (There are quiet a few weird ones.) There are too many characters that I ended up liking to make a list – my favourite however was Ye Xiu. There are also quiet a few annoying characters that got on my nerve all the time. (But those need to exist as well.) There was also some weird background animation going on – it seemed like a combination of animation and real life images (just look it up, I don’t know how to describe it better). The story was a bit repetitive in the beginning, but as it progressed it got more and more interesting.

Would I recommend this anime?

I would definitely recommend this anime! Be aware that it’s a Chinese anime, with Chinese audio (as I don’t know if that’s something that would bother you). This anime was very easy to get into and the main character is very likeable, so I would definitely recommend you to at least check it out. I can’t wait for the next season to come out, I NEED it in my life!

My rating: 9/10 (Great)

At last, the Sanzou Party has arrived in India. In this foreign land, where the anomaly’s influence runs rampant, their battles only heighten in their violence.

And also awaiting them is their tragic fate from 500 years ago—

What will they find at the end of their long and treacherous journey?

(Summary taken from MyAnimeList.)

My thoughts:

This is the third or fourth season of this anime, I’m really not sure how they are counting it and I couldn’t find an official number for this season.

Saiyuuki is one of those anime that I have been watching for a long time – and reading the manga as well. It’s actually one of the first anime that I got into, when I discovered what anime was and when I actively started searching for things to watch. So when I saw that a new season would be coming out I was BEYOND exited!! I have really missed all the characters from this story and I’m very glad that they decided to make another season!

Obviously I was already a fan of this anime, so I knew going in that I would enjoy this season as well. So many unexpected things happened this season and quiet a few interesting characters were introduced! We also got some more backstory for the main characters, which made me very happy (especially Goku’s, as he is my favourite). All in all this season was amazing and I hope that they make more in the future! I just NEED to know how the story will continue!!

Would I recommend this anime?

Now this is a tricky one. I don’t know if you can watch this new season without having seen anything of the original anime. The original anime aired in 2001 (if I’m not mistaken) so it’s quiet dated and I don’t know if old animation is something that bothers you. Still, seeing as this is one of my favourites I would definitely recommend it!! (Though it’s definitely not an anime that’s for everyone.)

Unlike many schools, attending Hyakkaou Private Academy prepares students for their time in the real world. Since many of the students are the children of the richest people in the world, the academy has its quirks that separate it from all the others. By day, it is a normal school, educating its pupils in history, languages, and the like. But at night, it turns into a gambling den, educating them in the art of dealing with money and manipulating people. Money is power; those who come out on top in the games stand at the top of the school.

Yumeko Jabami, a seemingly naive and beautiful transfer student, is ready to try her hand at Hyakkaou’s special curriculum. Unlike the rest, she doesn’t play to win, but for the thrill of the gamble, and her borderline insane way of gambling might just bring too many new cards to the table.

(Summary taken from MyAnimeList.)

My thoughts:

I honestly have no idea where to even start with this one. The whole concept of this story is very unique and as soon as I read the synopsis I knew that I had to watch this anime. After all I have never before encountered an anime about gambling. It was very interesting to see all the different types of gambles and games that they played in each episode. (As you may already know, I like anime that are about games.) It was also very interesting to see the extreme versions of the games – that was probably my favourite part of the anime.

All the characters were…interesting? Or more along the lines of fascinating? Basically everyone was seriously crazy and it was very interesting to see how each character thought and made decisions while playing the games. (I really can’t word that better.) I didn’t really like any of the characters, even though I found them fascinating. I just didn’t find anyone likeable and most of them annoyed me a lot. Also the expressions they make are BEYOND extreme! (Definitely look that up, if you want to know what I mean.)

Would I recommend this anime?

Yes, I would recommend this anime. It’s definitely a unique one with fascinating characters. The animation is amazing as well, though the art style might not be for everyone. It’s also quiet dark, so be aware of that!

My thoughts:

I have been seeing a lot about this anime around for ages, especially on tumblr. I was always curious about it and wanted to watch it, as the art and gifs seemed really interesting plus people seemed to like it a lot! So I just randomly decided to watch it one day and I ended up loving this anime!

The first season was interesting, though it didn’t hook me completely. I completely loved some of the characters, while some I didn’t like as much. (I don’t think there is one character that I hate.) The story, while interesting, wasn’t anything special. It felt more like an introduction to everything, the characters, the powers and the world. Also I tend to enjoy anime that feature people with special abilities a lot and this was obviously no exception to that.

The second season on the other hand was amazing!! I really loved where the story went and I couldn’t stop watching. I finished the seconds season in two days, that’s how obsessed with it I was. I loved finding out more about Dazai’s past, especially since he is one of my favourite characters! The second season really blew me away. The character development that happened within this season was AMAZING, especially since it didn’t happen “only” to the main characters.

Would I recommend this anime?

Obviously I would recommend this anime! I ended picking up the manga as well. I NEEDED to have more of the story! I’m all caught up with it at the moment and I’m desperately waiting for an update, many serious things are happening! This anime has also SO MANY literary references (especially to Japanese literature) – don’t worry you don’t need to know anything about that to watch it. I just happened to read up some of them after finishing the anime and found some of the parallels fascinating.
