The Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag || 2018 Edition

Tag

I wasn’t actually tagged by anyone to do this tag, but I have done it for three years now, so it’s become somewhat of a tradition on my blog. Plus it’s always interesting to look back at your reading and see what you enjoyed and didn’t in the first half of the year. (We shall ignore the fact that I’m a bit late with this tag.)

This year my reading has been a bit different. I decided to reread a few of my all time favourite books, as I missed their characters and being in their worlds. So I don’t actually have that many new books that I have read this year. What I’m trying to say is that this post might be a bit boring, but it’s what it is.

With that being said lets get into this tag!

1. BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2018

The best books that I have read so far this year are the Wayward Children books by Seanan McGuire. I read all three of them this year and completely ADORED them! They were so fantastic and diverse and I couldn’t get enough of them. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series when it comes out!

I have reviews for all three of these books, if you are interested in more of my thoughts on each one individually (all of them are spoiler-free):

2. BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2018

I’m cheating a little bit with this one, as I hadn’t finished Brisingr by Christopher Paolini in June. BUT I did read over 450 pages of it in June and I loved everything that I read. (I had around 300 pages of it left.) I did finish this book in July though and it’s definitely my favourite sequel of this year so far! I just adore the characters and the world of this series so much.

Eragon

3. MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

Vicious is one of my all time favourite books and definitely my favourite when it comes to Victoria Schwab’s books. I ADORED everything about that book! So when I heard that there would be a sequel I was beyond exited! So, obviously, Vengeful is my most anticipated release. (I really want to reread Vicious before getting to this one though.)

Victoria Schwab

4. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

While I didn’t dislike (let alone hate) The Atrocities I was quite disappointed by it. The premise of this book captivated me and I wanted to know more immediately, which is also why I decided to read it in the first place. Sadly it didn’t live up to my expectations and I was left unsatisfied. If you are interested in more of my thoughts, I have a review written for this book.

The Atrocities

5. BIGGEST SURPRISE

If you have followed me for a while you would know that I adore books by Stephen King. Recently I read Pet Sematary by him and loved it! Why would I consider this book the biggest surprise, when I already know that I love his books? It’s because I haven’t read anything by him in a while and actually forgot how much I enjoy his way of storytelling. This book was such a pleasant surprise and I can’t wait to pick up more books by him.

6. FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR

It would definitely have to be Seanan McGuire. I have read three of her books this year and they were all fantastic. I just love the way she writes and creates worlds within her stories. I definitely plan on picking up more of her books soon!

7. NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

I actually don’t have one. I looked at all the new books that I read in the first half of the year and I realised that I didn’t have a new fictional crush. (Which is fair, as I actually don’t get crushes that often.) So there is that!

8. NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER

Nancy from Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire. She is actually the first character that I read about that identifies as asexual. Being asexual myself I was so happy to see that representation! Aside from that I loved her personality and her in general. She is definitely a favourite of mine in this series! (Obviously, as I picked her for this category.)

9. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

No book made me cry this year. Mostly because I didn’t read any heartbreaking books. I just wasn’t in the best space mentally this year, so I definitely didn’t need sad books in my life. So I actually don’t have an answer for this one, unless you count me tearing up when rereading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (but I tear up when rereading any Harry Potter books).

10. BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

The books that made me really happy so far this year were the ones that I reread. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanHowl’s Moving Castle, The Star-Touched Queen and Nimona are some of my all time favourite books/graphic novels. It was a great decision to reread them, as I enjoyed every second of it. (Plus they definitely lifted my mood at the time I read them again.) I just couldn’t pick one of these books, as they are all just magical!

11. FAVOURITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION

As usually I don’t have one for this category, as haven’t watched any. I just don’t tend to watch movies that often, let alone book to film adaptations. I don’t know what it is about movies, but I almost never feel motivated to watch them. So there is that!

12. FAVOURITE POST YOU’VE DONE THIS YEAR

I love all the posts that I do. Otherwise I wouldn’t be posting them in the first place! However there is one that stands out in my mind. And that is my GIGANTIC Book UnHaul!! [ 50+ books ] post. This was the first time ever that I unhauled books and I loved the experience. Sharing it with all of you was a ton of fun as well! 😀

13. MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR

The most beautiful book I bought this year is definitely The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo. The cover of this book is gorgeous, but the illustrations within are even more beautiful! Everything about this book is stunning, from the design to the actual stories within.

Grisha

14. NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

There are actually quite a few new releases that I want to read. I decided to pick the one that I actually already own, but haven’t read yet. To Kill a Kingdom sounds amazing and like a book that I would completely adore. Plus I have heard amazing things about it from people I trust. I can’t wait to start reading this one!

15. WHAT BOOK DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?

I don’t actually have an answer for this one. I could name a few books that I would like to read, but I’m a mood reader and never actually stick to a TBR. So there is actually no point in me answering this question! Though if I had to pick something, I would like to finish some series till the end of the year.

What was the best book/books that you read in the first half of the year? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you very much for reading and I hope that you have an amazing day!

  1. I loved The Wayward Children Series too! You should try Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire. It’s a standalone and really short too but it’s such an interesting world! Also highly recommend the audiobook! It’s really well done.
My favourite book from the first half of 2018 was a question in the tag I had 3 answers to, I couldn’t pick just one! Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody, Truly Devious by Maureen Johnston & The Menagerie Series by Tui T Sutherland & Kari Sutherland!

    1. I definitely plan to check that book out, as I want to read more by Seanan McGuire. Thanks for the recommendation! 🙂
Picking just one favourite book is always impossible for me! I have heard so many good things about Ace of Shades and it’s a book I definitely plan on reading. I haven’t heard about the other books you mentioned, but I’ll look them up.

      1. The Menagerie is a super fun middle grade series set in a Menagerie of magical creatures. And truly Devious is a thriller mystery type thing. Loved both of them! I can’t wait for the sequel to Truly Devious! Or Ace of Shades for that matter 😂😂

  2. Yessss! ❤ The Language of Thorns is such a gorgeous book. I think Leigh Bardugo's books just keep getting prettier and prettier. 😀 Great post. Hard to believe the year is over half way through already!
