A Discovery of Witches Season 1 || TV Talk

TV Talk is a feature on my blog where I talk about a tv show or one of its seasons. I don’t consider these posts to be reviews, they are just a place where I can talk about the tv shows that I watch.

Disclaimer: This post is SPOILER FREE.

I read A Discovery of Witches in 2015 and I hated it. There is no other way of saying that, I seriously didn’t enjoy that book at all. Perhaps it was the timing of then I read it, perhaps I just didn’t care about the book. (I’m betting on the second one.)

So why in the world did I decide to watch the tv show, when I hated the book?

Basically Kat @Life and Other Disasters said how much she enjoyed the show. She convinced me to give it a chance and that is exactly what I did. I’m very glad that I decided to follow her advice and watch this show, as I ended up enjoying it a lot (even though I had some problems with it as well). I’m so exited for the future seasons of A Discover of Witches, they can’t come out soon enough! So thank you Kat, for convincing me to give this show a chance!

In a world where witches, vampires and daemons live discreetly among humans, Diana Bishop is the last in one long line of distinguished witches. Unwilling to embrace her heritage she has immersed herself in her career as a historian. Her particular interest is alchemy and she visits Oxford to research some of Elias Ashmole’s papers. She requests Ashmole 782 and as soon as she receives it she knows there is something uncanny about it; when she opens it she is shocked. She learns that 782 has been presumed lost for a very long time and that each species of Creature desires it. She is besieged and threatened and knows that, to protect herself, she must uncover all the mysteries of 782. She encounters the enigmatic vampire, Matthew Clairmont, who offers to help her; their mutual attraction is immediate, undeniable and inexplicable because they both know that witches and vampires are not supposed to trust each other.

I can’t judge this as an adaptation, as I don’t really remember much about the book. I tend to forget things about the books I dislike (my brain just doesn’t hold that information), so don’t expect me to compare it to the book or anything like that. I’m purely going off on what I saw in the show. I just wanted to clarify that, before I get to actually writing about the tv show.

This wasn’t a perfect tv show, I enjoyed some aspects of it while I had problems with some others. But the most important thing for me was the fact that I had a lot of fun watching this show. I looked forward to each episode and it was always a delight watching it, even when I had problems with it. I ended up watching this show in a few days, I just couldn’t stop watching it. I can’t name all the details that I had problems with, nor everything that I liked, since that would contain spoilers. I’ll be more  general when talking about this show, I won’t mention specific events.

If you know me, then you know that I love vampires and witches. So whenever I come across a tv show that contains both, I have to check it out. The world of A Discover of Witches was fascinating, though I wish that we got more of it as well. Some things just weren’t explained enough, for me at least. I’m very interested in the history of The Congregation and I hope that we will learn more about it in the future.

I also like how technology is implemented in this show. How some characters are scientists and how they are researching DNA of all the different species. That is something that I’m interested as well, I really want to know how the different species came to be. The technology aspect of this show is fascinating, as I have never seen it done this way in a show about vampires/witches.

I really wish that we had gotten more information about the demons. I don’t really understand them, what they are capable of and what they actually do. Witches and vampires were explored rather well throughout the show and we got some backstory and explanation of powers for both. There wasn’t much about demons though, which I found disappointing as I was really interested to learn more about them. Hopefully we will learn more about them in the future seasons.

Side note: The show is shot beautifully and all the locations look fantastic!

First of all I would like to say that I really like the casting (as someone who doesn’t remember the descriptions of the characters from the show). The actors brought all the characters to life and I thought they all did a very good job. Though that is coming from someone who isn’t that knowledgable in things regarding acting.

In this show there were characters that I adored, hated, was fascinated by and didn’t care about. So basically it was a mix when it comes to that. I liked the villains in this show a lot. In the sense that I hated them, but was fascinated by them at the same time. That is the best combination, in my opinion, when it comes to villains. (Though I have to say that I love many different kinds of villains.) I don’t think I need to mention the characters I didn’t care about, you can probably guess why I don’t feel like talking about them.

I adored Diana. Even though I did question some of her decisions and thought-processes. She was such an interesting characters and I loved seeing her grow as a person, as she discovered more about herself. I can’t wait to see where her character is going to go in the future. I also loved Matthew. He was also a fascinating character and I loved learning about him and his past.

I need to mention that the romance between Diana and Matthew is insta-love. There isn’t much time between them meeting and then declaring their love. This isn’t something that bothered me, mostly because I already expected it (as I had been warned about it). The conversations that they have between each other are amazing, I just love seeing them interact with each other. I can’t wait to see more of them and their relationship in the future.

Three other characters that I love are Marcus, Miriam and Hamish. (Especially Marcus.) We don’t get to see as much of them, since the show mostly focused on Diana and Matthew and The Congregation, but I loved what I saw. I can’t wait to get more scenes with them in it in the future seasons!

The mystery behind Ashmole 782, the stuff surrounding The Congregation, the relationship between the different species, all of those things were fascinating to me. I just wanted to know more about all of the things I mentioned. And every time something more got revealed I was so exited and happy.

I do have problems with the story as well. In the beginning there was a lot of info-dumping and it was too exposition heavy. As the show progressed it got a lot better in that aspect. There were also some inconsistencies in the abilities of the characters. (I can’t go more into detail, as it’s spoilers.) Some scenes, especially the emotionally heavy ones, lasted either too long or they were too short. The too long ones kinda felt awkward to me and for the short ones I just wanted a bit more, once more sentence or something. That was the biggest problem with the show that I had.

It was a very fun show. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but I enjoyed my watching experience a lot. For me this is a show that isn’t the best, but you still love watching it. I would definitely recommend this show to everyone. At least check out the first two episodes, as this show is worth giving a shot. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!

Have you watched A Discovery of Witches? What do you think of the show? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you very much for reading and I hope that you have a wonderful day!

  1. YAAAY! I am so happy you enjoyed the show. I 100% agree on it not being perfect. There were some flaws, especially with the lack of explanations in some areas (I think I struggled most with the timewalking) but it still sucked me in. The cinematography was beautiful and the characters really well crafted. At the beginning Matthew is so creepy, but then you ship them hard, right? (at least it was that way for me)
    Great post!!

    1. I’m so happy that you recommended it to me! 😀 Yeah, I struggled with the explanation for timewalking as well. I’m hoping that it will be better explained in the next season, as it’s going to be relevant for the story a lot more. I loved how creepy Matthew was in the beginning! He is a vampire, a predator, and he is supposed to be threatening so I’m glad to see that they portrayed him that way. Thank you!! ❤

      1. I really hope the book, that I honestly don’t enjoy reading, will give me some insight into the timewalker stuff. I cannot wait a whole year haha Teresa is pregnant right now, so I think it will take some time until they start filming again. HOWEVER, they did get renewed for a season 2 and 3, which coveres the entire trilogy. So that’s reassuring!

        1. Well, the book should give you more insight. If it didn’t, then that would be poor world-building but I’m hoping for the best! 😂 The waiting is going to be torture, but you’re right at least we know that we are going to get 2 more seasons and a complete story. We don’t have to worry about the show being cancelled or anything like that! 😀

  2. I’m in the same boat- I really didn’t like the book at all, but I loved the show!! I did like the way technology was implemented- good point. And yeah the romance is instalove- which bothered me in the book- but didn’t mind in the show so much (perhaps cos the actors had such good characters). And yeah there is a lot of infodump with the plot, but again, I thought it worked better in the way it was shown more in the tv show. So yeah, I agree it’s not perfect, but it’s a darn sight better than the book! Great review 🙂

    1. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who enjoyed the show but didn’t like the book! 😀 The insta-love bothered me in the book as well, but not in the show. And I can’t really explain why, perhaps you are right and it has to do with the actors. Thank you! 🙂

    1. It surprised me how much I enjoyed this show, especially since I hated the book. And I agree, adaptations can go two ways. Yeah, not remembering the source material can be a great thing! 😀
Thank you! ❤ I hope you enjoy it, if you decided to give it a chance!
