Summary:

An ancient mystery. An unlikely union. For one young princess in a state of peril, a dangerous wish could be the only answer…

She is the princess of Bharata—captured by her kingdom’s enemies, a prisoner of war. Now that she faces a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. But should she trust Vikram, the notoriously cunning prince of a neighboring land? He promises her freedom in exchange for her battle prowess. Together they can team up and win the Tournament of Wishes, a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor. It seems like a foolproof plan—until Gauri and Vikram arrive at the tournament and find that danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans, mischievous story birds, a feast of fears, and twisted fairy revels. New trials will test their devotion, strength, and wits. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there’s nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

I adore Roshani Chokshi’s writing style. It’s beautiful and flowery and I can’t get enough of it. I want to read everything that Roshani Chokshi writes. I read her first book The Star-Touched Queen a bit over two years ago and it immediately became one of my favourite books. I have written a review for it, if you are interested in more of my thoughts. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to pick up A Crown of Wishes! Though to be fair, I have reread The Star-Touched Queen a few times since I fist read it, so there is that as well.

A Crown of Wishes was a wonderfully magical book. The world-building that Roshani Chokshi does in this series is simply vivid and imaginative. I can’t get enough of her stories set in this world! In A Crown of Wishes the world gets even more expanded and we get to learn about many more aspects of it and I completely adored that. I really wish that there was a map for this world. I loved the tournament aspect of this book, it was very interesting seeing all the different challenges and how the characters dealt with them.

Speaking of the characters, I completely adore Gauri! She was such a fascinating character to read about. I was intrigued by her when I first read about her in The Star-Touched Queen and when I found out that she would be one of the main characters in this book I was ecstatic! I loved seeing her when she is older and how much she has changed from the character in the first book. Vikram was also a very fascinating character, a lot different than I expected him to be. Not that that is a bad thing, he actually ended up being a lot more interesting than I thought he would be in the beginning.

Both Gauri and Vikram were amazing characters on their own, I adored reading from both of their perspectives. Their interactions were amazing to read about as well. I loved seeing how their interactions and thoughts towards the other person changed as the story progressed. There were so many amazing conversations between the two of them! There were also many interesting side-characters in this story that I enjoyed learning more about.

Overall I completely adored this book! A Crown of Wishes was an amazing sequel to The Star-Touched Queen. I definitely recommend this book to everyone! I can’t wait to get my hands on more of Roshani Chokshi’s books, especially Star-Touched Stories as I need more from these characters and from this world.

  1. I read Star-Touched Queen when it was first released and I have to admit that I wasn’t a fan of it. Though, I distinctly remember saying that Choksi had some of the most beautiful writing I’ve come across in YA. I might need to reread the first book, though. I’m almost certain I’ll like it more now that I’m older. I think I’ll appreciate the odd yet fantastical content a lot more the second time around. Also, I don’t remember a damn thing about it other than the quality of the writing so I definitely need to fix that before I get around to this one. But it’s great to hear that you loved it! It makes me look forward to reading the books! ❤ Lovely review!

  2. This is a lovely review, Anna, and I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed this book so much! ❤ I read The Star-Touched Queen a little while ago and really enjoyed it and I keep on hearing that Crown of Wishes is even better, so… I should get to it at some point haha 🙂

  3. I’m really glad you enjoyed this book Anna, and I pretty much agree with everything you wrote about A Crown of Wishes! 🙂 I loved Roshani Chokshi’s The Star-Touched Queen and I actually loved A Crown of Wishes even more. Chokshi’s writing is stunning and her world building is probably my favourite thing about both books in this duology.
I take it you’ll be reading The Gilded Wolves when it’s released right? Are you excited for it?
Great review, and again I’m so glad you enjoyed this book. 🙂 ❤

    1. I don’t know which book I love more, The Star-Touched Queen or A Crown of Wishes. They were both stunning and I adored both of them, but it’s really hard for me to pick a favourite. 🙂
I’m definitely going to be reading The Gilded Wolves! Not sure when I’ll be picking it up, but it’s definitely a book that I plan on reading. It sounds simply amazing and I have heard great things about it as well! 😀 What about you? Are you going to be picking it up soon?
      Thank you Beth! ❤ 🙂

  4. Sadly, I haven’t read anything by Chokshi yet! I’ve been hearing amazing things about The Gilded Wolves recently, too. So, the characters which are the focus in this book are not the characters who are the focus from the first book? Is this truly a sequel, or just another story set in the same universe?

    1. I definitely recommend this duology, it’s fantastic. I really want to read The Gilded Wolves, as that book sounds simply amazing. A Crown of Wishes is more of a companion book to the first one. It follows the story of two characters that appear in the first book, but they are not main characters there. Still, I would recommend reading The Star-Touched Queen first, as some of the characters from that book appear in A Crown of Wishes. 😀

      1. Brilliant! I love it when an author uses the same universe and refocuses on new characters. This always excites me because I don’t have to be invested in the original characters to enjoy the second book – just the world the characters come from. I’m definitely looking forward to it. Thanks for the recommendation, Anna!
