October 2019 || Wrap Up

Monthly Wrap Up Green

October was an a month of ups and downs. It wasn’t the best month for me, but it wasn’t the worst either. So there is that at least. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

University started again for me in October. The highlight of that is the seminar that I’m doing during this semester. I really like the professor and the theme I got is very interesting, I’m looking forward to researching it. ๐Ÿ˜Šย Another great thing is that two of my friends attend this seminar as well, which means that I’m seeing them more often and I’m very happy about that!

i love my mom GIFThe middle part of the month was the hardest for me. My mental health was bad during that time and I was really struggling. I’m so thankful to my mom for being there for me. She talked to me a lot and really helped me through this time. I love her so much! ๐Ÿ’œย At the moment my mental health is a lot better, but it’s still not completely fine. (I really can’t explain that better without going into more detail, which I don’t want to do.) Hopefully my mental health will be better in November, or that I will at least have fewer bad days.

The last weekend of the month (rather this past weekend) I got sick. I had a fever for two days and I have been coughing ever since. This didn’t really surprise me, as a ton of people around me were sick as well. Anyway, I’m still not completely healthy but I’m feeling a lot better! I forgot how much being sick sucked, I haven’t had a cold in a while. (I seriously can’t wait for the time when I’ll stop coughing my lungs out.)

October wasn’t the best reading month for me. I simply wasn’t in the mood to read all that much, which was mostly due to the mental health problems that I have already mentioned. I did end up reading a ton of fanfiction this month, which was a lot of fun. ๐Ÿ˜Šย (Fanfiction usually manages to lift my mood!) On the other hand, I’m really proud of how much I blogged this month. I’m hoping to keep this blogging streak up!

Wrap Up

Harry PotterHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5) by J.K. Rowling

5 out of 5 stars

I continued my reread of Harry Potter in October as well. I haven’t reread The Order of the Phoenixย in years, so it was very nice getting back into this story. Though I must say that this has never been one of my favourite Harry Potter books.

I completely forgot how much I love angry Harry. I don’t know if this is a popular opinion or not? I just really love how angry he is in this book. Umbridge is still the worst and I hate her, not that that is a surprise. I’m still not over the ending of this book, not even since I fist read it (you already know what I mean).

The Avant-GuardsThe Avant-Guards, Vol. 1 by Carly Usdin, Noah Hayes

3.5 out of 5 stars

This graphic novel features a very diverse cast of characters. There are characters with different sexualities, a non-binary character, characters with diverse body types and skin colours. There was also a great discussion about anxiety. The characters were definitely my favourite part of this first volume of The Avant-Guards. I loved learning about them and seeing them interact with each other.ย The problems that I had with this first volume were mostly with the story. I found the story not to be that interesting. Not actually a lot happened in this volume, it was mostly setting up the characters and the general plot.

You can read my full review of this graphic novelย here, if you are interested in more of my thoughts!

MooncakesMooncakes by Suzanne Walker, Wendy Xu

4 out of 5 stars

Mooncakes is a very diverse graphic novel that features many magical elements, including witches and werewolfs. Both of the main characters are Chinese-American. Nova is also hard of hearing, while Tam is non-binary. There are also many diverse side characters, like Novaโ€™s grandmothers. The characters in Mooncakes were all wonderful and I loved learning more about them. Seeing them interact with each other and care for the people surrounding them was amazing! They all just warmed my heart.

Tash Hearts TolstoyTash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee

3 out of 5 stars

I don’t usually read contemporaries, it’s just not a genre that I gravitate towards (even though I have some favourite books in it). I wanted to read Tash Hearts Tolstoy because of the asexuality representationย (which is also my sexuality). I didn’t know much about this book aside from that.

There were some aspects of this book that I enjoyed and some that I didn’t. I’m going to be writing a full review for this book, so I’ll share more of my thoughts then. For now I’ll just say that the ace rep was done well and the book, overall, was alright.

  1. I’m sorry hear your month wasn’t the best, I have to agree with you October hasn’t been the best for me either. Here’s to a better November! ๐Ÿ˜€
I keep thinking about re-reading Harry Potter. I think you are the first person to say they love angsty Harry, I personally can’t stand him, but I do like the way Rowling wrote him because it fits his character!

  2. I’m sorry to hear that October wasn’t the best of months. I hope you’re feeling better and that November is smooth sailing for you.
Rereading is usually my go-to method if I’m in a slump or not feeling great, but I can’t say I’ve ever read Harry potter ๐Ÿ™ˆ

    1. So far November has been good. Hopefully it will stay that way! ๐Ÿ˜€
Really? Well, I would obviously recommend it! Harry Potter is my favourite series and they are the books that I have reread the most times in my life. ๐Ÿ™‚
