In the past I did a post where I listed 5 books that I predicted would be 5 star reads for me. You can check out that post here, if you are interested in it.
Confession time: I uploaded that post on the 8th of December 2017. Yes it’s been nearly TWO YEARS since I have done that post and I’m only now wrapping it up.
(I seriously can’t believe that ti took me this long to do this!) That just shows how much of a mood reader I am, as even the books I thought I would love I didn’t end up picking up for a long time. But here we are now, I have read those 5 books and I can finally talk about them!
Side note: I do plan on doing another 5 star TBR predictions post, where I’ll list other books on my TBR that I think will be 5 stars. I just find the concept behind this kind of post fascinating and I want to keep doing them. Hopefully I’ll read the books I put on that list faster, but we shall see. My next predictions should be coming very soon!
With all of that out of the way, let’s get into the books!
The first book that I chose for my original post was A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab and above you can see the reason I though this was going to be a 5 star read.
I ended up giving this book 4 stars!
I did like this book a lot, but not as much as the first one
(or the third, as I have read that one as well). There were just elements in it that I didn’t care all that much about. The characters were great and I enjoyed learning more about them, and the new characters that were introduced in this book. You can check out my full review of this book, if you are interested in more of my thoughts on it.
The second book that I choose was Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch. I read this book just recently, since I decided to reread the first book in the series, The Lies of Locke Lamora, first before continuing on with the series.
I ended up giving this book 4.5 stars!
I was mostly correct with my prediction that I would love this book. I just felt that the book dragged for a bit in the middle, but that is the only reason that I lowered my rating. Aside from that I completely adored this book. The pirate aspect of Red Seas Under Red Skies was amazing and I enjoyed the new characters that were introduced. Locke Lamora is still my favourite, I completely adore him. His and Jean’s friendship is one of the best out there. I have written a full review for this book, if you want to know more of my thoughts on it.
The third book that I choose was Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan. I just recently read this book, this was the last book that I read for this post.
(And the one I kept putting off the most as it’s nearly 700 pages long.)
I gave this book 4 stars!
I really enjoyed Theft of Swords! It surprised me how fast I got into the story and fell in love with the main characters, as it has been a while since that has happened to me with a fantasy series. This is a series that I definitely plan on continuing soon, I just need to find out how the story will continue. The reason that this book didn’t get 5 stats is because I had some problems with it, mostly the world-building and side characters felt clunky at the beginning part of the story. I plan on writing a full review for this book soon, so I’ll go into more of my thoughts then.
The fourth book that I picked was The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan. I actually thought I would buy the other books in this series first, before I started reading it as I enjoy binge-reading Rick Riordan books. That hasn’t happened yet, as The Hidden Oracle is the only one I own so far.
I gave this book 4 stars!
I enjoyed the majority of this book, there were also some things that bothered me. I didn’t like Meg at all. I don’t know what it was about her, we just didn’t click. And since she is the dual main character along with Apollo it meant I had to read a lot about her. I was also very uncomfortable with the power imbalance between her and Apollo. With that I mean that she could order Apollo to do anything she wants and he must follow that order. I have written a full review for this book, if you are interested in more of my thoughts.
The fifth and final book that I picked was Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I’m just now reading the reasons why I thought I would love this book and I noticed the “characters that I already find fascinating and want to know more about”. I have no idea why that is one of the reasons?
I gave this book 5 stars!
Finally a book that I predicted correctly!
(Though there was a 4.5 one that I count as correct as well.) I completely adored everything about Uprooted. From the world, characters, magic to the writing style and cover. Uprooted has become one of my new favourite books, I loved it that much. I need to pick up more books by Naomi Novik soon! I have written a full review for this book, if you are interested in more of my thoughts and want to know why exactly I loved it as much as I did.
